Review: Voice of Eye

The Portland Improvisations CD [Conundrum Unlimited]

Voice of Eye was a Houston duo, maker of ambient noise soundscapes in the early-mid 1990's. I never really knew Bonnie and Jim, but the few times I saw them perform in Austin, once before Illusion of Safety if I remember correctly, were always beautiful affairs. They moved to New Mexico and seemingly disappeared. In the past few years they have started releasing music again, picking up where they left off with long flowing live improvisations, drenched in reverb and atmosphere. This is Ritual Magic music, drums, chimes and intoned voices bouncing off virtual cavern walls. There used to be much more music like this—what ever happened to Hybyrds?—but now Voice of Eye may be alone. The music at times sounds electronic, and everything does sound like it has been sent through a dozen reverb boxes, but we are told “All sounds herein are acoustic in origin.” They then remain master conjurers, transmuting sounds into mystical gold.
